Variety, they say is the spice of life. The youths of a nation constitute its labour force and indeed represent the future of the nation. For the labour force to however properly fill their position as the driving force behind the nation, they have to dabble in all the various forms of labour, be it white collar or blue collar, and indeed deliberately vary the ways and methods by which they inject their energy into the workforce, with especial focus on the vocational and technical forms of labour.

The Nigerian labour force, based on our educational system and popular mentality, however, concentrates almost totally on white collar labour and acquisition of university degrees as the best way to boost the labour force. This erroneous decision is further reinforced by the fact that our schools are totally theory oriented and ignore almost all the practical aspects of things being taught in the schools. However, based on observations of foreign countries and also the minute percentage of people locally who decided on vocational training over a university degree, it had been observed that vocational training has a number of advantages over university education. In a country where employment for university graduates is now almost a pipe dream, vocational and technical training is seeming more like the best solution to our dear country’s problems. Below are outlined some of the advantages of vocational training over getting a university degree.

First off, as a nation of very physical people, we are much better able to utilize our brain when we involve in vocational training that involves hand on practices. This leads to a more efficient use of human resources and ensures nothing goes to waste, not even that muscle that you are building.

Also, due to the increasing rate of unemployment, a person trained in vocational studies has a much better chance of employing himself and standing on his own feet than someone with a university degree. This makes for a reduction in unemployment and reduces the strain on the government to provide jobs for the people. Third, with an increase in the number of people with vocational training and consequently, an increase in the number of business startups and vocational workshops in the country, more employment will be created, as the vocational workers now become employers to aid the government in reducing unemployment a second time, the first time being when they removed themselves from the ranks of the unemployed. Another advantage is that, with vocational training, it becomes quite possible and mildly easy for a person to become independent at a young age, leaving a lot of years ahead for such a person to work on developing his vocation and expanding his horizon.

Also, vocational training usually takes less time to complete than getting a university degree and become useful as soon as the training is completed, although this is subject to the attitude of the person taking the vocational training. The main point to note is that without vocational education and training, it is virtually impossible for this country to achieve its dream of becoming an industrialized nation.
