The main purposes of an examination, especially as conducted in a higher institution of learning are to test the knowledge of students acquired over time and their understanding of a particular course/discipline, to determine their depth and proficiency and of course, to consider their worthiness to progress to the next level of their academic endeavors.

Usually, preparing for an examination involves the gathering of bulky materials, the conducting of extensive research (as most lecturers mark down students who simply regurgitate the basic templates given in class) and internalizing all the information considered relevant to ‘demolish’ the examination

For the science students, the preparation is arguably even more intense as they are required by default to master formulas and principles, find past questions, and solve series of related problems in a bid to improve their calculating skills

It becomes apparent from the above that adequate, well-planned preparation is the only key to academic excellence and as those who have tried ‘short-cuts’ in the past have discovered, there are no real short cuts to success and there exist no alternatives to hard work and diligence. After all, PROPER PREPARATION PREVENTS POOR PERFORMANCE.

Now, crash reading is the act of devouring speedily (and usually without a true comprehension of what is being devoured) selected information for the purpose of an examination or other assessment, usually done through cramming, with the ultimate aim of simply ‘passing and moving on’, an objective that is in itself wrong, dull and uninspiring.

Some students will argue that they have always crash read and that it has been a hit ‘back to back’, it still doesn’t take away from the fact that it’s a horrible habit that can have adverse consequences and expose one’s shallowness when one actually needs the information one has ‘crash gotten’…

Now, the above scenario begs the question “why would a serious-minded student crash read when s/he, like everyone else, has a whole semester to prepare for an examination and why rely solely on luck to scale through an assessment when others are relying on sheer hard work, painstaking study and perseverance.

It bothers the imagination and it is quite frankly, beyond reason to think that there are students who simply walk idly along and hope to crash read in a night or two and still expect to pass and move forward along with other students who have endured sleepless night, stuck to a particular routine and persevered through cold and hot nights.

Unless one possesses supernatural abilities, there is no denying the fact that there’s a limit to the amount of information one can assimilate when one crash reads (it is called crash reading for a reason) as opposed to information systematically acquired through diligent studies over a sustained period of time.

In conclusion, crash reading, like the crash landing of an airplane is a very dangerous risk, the difference being that while the latter occurs as a result of a combination of factors generally beyond control, expertise or experience; the former occurs usually as a result of laxity, laziness and a general lack of ambition and so for students who base the outcome of their assessment; its success or otherwise on their abilities to maneuver through and assimilate all the information needed within a short span of time, crash reading is a total MISS.
