Computer Science – 3 Wrong Assumptions About The Course

Coming up on the next few lines are some of the wrong assumptions people have for the course – Computer Science

  • Is It Not All About Programming? : Programming is the action or process of writing computer codes and programs, does that in any way sound like “Programming is the study of Computer Science”? Putting it clear, programming is just one of the numerous branches of Computer Science, it just seems somewhat obvious than the others due to its lucrative nature or probably for the fact that so many people are into it, perhaps due to the money in it, some also take it as an hobby. That’s why you see a secondary school leaver who can write a couple of HTML syntax and construct a coloured table on Mozilla feeling like he/she is better than a Computer Science graduate who does’t even know the full meaning of HTML.
Conclusively, programming is not computer science, it’s a branch and it’s not even a MUST-KNOW for a computer scientist, any computer student can decide to dive in another aspect of computing, let’s say Networking for instance.
  • Is It Not Computer Repairing? : First of all, there’s nothing like computer repairing; if your hard disk shuts down in the middle of the night, you will get the nuts screwed out and repair it? What if your ram failed while struggling with Pes 15 on your low end PC, you will get the ram repaired? All these things can only be replaced with new ones, so what is the ‘repair’ about computers. Apart from computer parts replacement, we only have computer maintenance, all these can be done by any adventurous human who can trouble him/herself much enough to open a computer and do the needed deed that should be done for the PC to come back to its normal sense. And if you open it and complicate the situation, you are on your own though, this is where the service of Bro Sikiru, the popular street Computer Repairer comes in.
Computer science students are somehow too optioned to consider such tasks as a major, God knows the lecturers might not even mention “ram” throughout the years of a computer science student, you only learn it if you are feeling too idle.
Conclusively, computer repairers don’t exist, we only have computer enthusiasts who can open a system and replace or maintain what needs it. Computer scientists don’t repair computers.

  • Is It Not meant For Guys : I was thinking they do say “what a man can do, a woman can do better“?? Seems people do not reason that way when it comes to Computer Science as a field of study. Parents will hardly allow their daughters to opt for the course as they probably think the course is masculine. Is it or is it not? That is a question that shouldn’t be deliberated. Let’s say NO to such assumption and look at the positive side. Considering the obvious fact that ladies are scarce in the field, imagine a lady studying the course and being good at what she does, is it not a greater chance for her to beat the competitive market and hit a job faster as most companies might probably prefer a lady to a guy if they are both of somewhat same skills?? Yes ofcourse.
That’s why when you stroll into the computer science departments of some schools and all you will see are guys with very dry swags and nonchalant attitudes, why should they have all those when there is no one to impress *smiles, that’s not so serious but it counts*??
Conclusively, no course is meant for a particular gender, stop discrimination and spread the positive parts.

DISCLAIMER : THIS POST IS NOT IN ANY WAY MEANT TO LURE ANYONE INTO STUDYING OR NOT TO STUDY THE COURSE, IT’S JUST AN EXTRACT FROM A SURVEY AFTER STUDYING SOME NORMS IN THE SOCIETY.
